Shakespeare’s Flourishing

Along with Shakespeare returning to the curriculum, the popularity of his works is far from waning. Testament to this is the number of rangatahi who have continued to be involved in Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ)’s Festivals, especially the ever-increasing student-directed scenes. Their creativity, entrepreneurship, managing their time and peers, communicating with commitment and appreciation of the relevance of the Bard’s words to the human psyche, are undeniable benefits, on many transferable levels.

As opportunities and requests for Shakespeare performances abound, SGCNZ has a fulsome two months ahead around the greater Wellington region for all ages, incorporating the natural environment, dance, music, song and, of course, acting. These include Venus & Adonis in the Botanic Garden, three performances by 15 different groups of Tamariki, three performances for the Wellington Heritage Festival, in Old St Paul’s, Erskine College, and Llandaff Homestead in Masterton.

In addition, SGCNZ’s National Shakespeare Schools Production 9-day course will be in Dunedin for the 48 students selected from our 24 Regional and National Festivals, plus a winner from our Costume Design and Music Composition Competitions, with two culminating public performances on 4 and 5 October.
